Could you tell us something about your story & who inspired you to be the person that you are today?
Mars: My story is pretty much being a little boy that grew up in church my whole family has something to do with music and/or preaching so I was destined to do one of the two. I always focused more so on the music. My story basically was that me being taught as I was raised that if you have faith you can do anything and as long as you believe in yourself it doesn’t matter if you see it or not you could attain it. I never thought about having a job, I never thought about any of those things. Years down the line I grew up actually perfecting my craft and playing the keyboard, playing the bass, playing the drums, playing in church, and then I started producing eventually. So that was a wake up call for me to realize that I’m an example for a lot of young kids that may not believe that you don’t need relationships or you don’t need to be signed to people to make it in the industry. That’s kinda what I preach now and I’m kinda taking the responsibility of being an example of that.
Have you always wanted to be a singer or a producer more?
Mars: I was singing before I even knew what producing was. I definitely always wanted to produce once I found out what that was like making beats. I would go with that. I always wanted to be a producer more.
You’re also a member of a band called “1500 or nothin”. Tell us, do you prefer to work as a solo artist or to be part of a group? Why?
Mars: Uhmm I feel like a combination of both and why because when I’m by myself I only have my own ideas and with a collective you know we’re all a unique group of individuals to say the least. So everybody think different and just bringing that flavor, characteristics, and having a different approach never hurts.
Talk to us about your new project titled, No Days Off?
Mars: My new project just dropped is so tight! It is a montage of a lot of different things and a lot of different vibes. I will say it’s something that you can put on and just ride to from beginning to end because it has a lot of different vibes.
Which is your favorite track?
Mars: At the moment I would probably say…’I will’ Feat. T.I.
You’ve already collaborated with some big names like T.I., Faith Evans, Snoop Dogg, Jay-Z, Kanye West, The Game, & many more! Who’s your favorite collaboration so far and who can we expect to see you doing work with next?
Mars: My favorite collaboration so far would have to be Kanye West on the song, “Stronger”. To look forward to is “awesomeness” from me! Awesome music, awesome production, great vibes, awesome radio shows, awesome merch, awesome clothes…everything AWESOME! You guys are definitely part of the swag, more awesome RnBass. This tape definitely fits that RnBass vibes.
What advice do you have for people who also want to become successful in the music industry?
Mars: Utilize your brain as much as possible and when I say that I mean, we have so much time we’re given 24 hours a day. The average person is on their phone at least 6-8 hours a day. If you put just half of that time to focus on ‘let me write down a vision’, ‘let me think of something that can help the world’…anything like that. The more you think of stuff and write it down, then the more things you have to contribute, the more business venture, and the more successful you can be oppose to just taking a stab at one thing that other millions of people are doing.
How does it feel to be nominated for two Grammy’s?!
Mars: It feels awesome twice!! It was definitely unexpected, I feel like I’m going to get at least one of them. Let’s pray that I get both.
