Mother’s Day is one of the most important days of the year – while families spend the day showering the women who gave birth to them with gifts, food and tons love. However, within the past several years, the music community has lost some of the most outstanding mother figures; from Whitney Houston, to Kanye West’s mother, and the latest, Tupac’s mom, Alfeni Shakur.
Early Tuesday morning (May 3), the former Black Panthers activist and the mother of the late-great rapper passed away at 69. Reports say she was taken to a local hospital and died just before 10:30 p.m. after a 911 phone call. It’s said she was being cared for by a friend after she was not feeling physically well. An investigation of the death is now being made.
Mama Shakur, born as Alice Williams, changed her name when she moved to New York City and joined the Black Panther movement. She was arrested in 1969 and charged with conspiracy to bomb multiple busy city landmarks.
Through it all, Mrs. Shakur always made sure her son’s legacy was tastefully maintained and cultivated after his death in 1996.
